Goodbye to cash: contactless payments gain momentum during the pandemic

Adiós al efectivo: el contactless toma fuerza durante pandemia

During the pandemic, people have made changes to their daily routines, and one of the habits that has gained the most momentum is the use of contactless payments. According to a Mastercard study, there has been a 35% increase in adoption across the region, driven by simplicity, security, and hygiene. This payment method also includes new technologies through which companies offer different payment options, providing greater convenience for consumers.

Although this trend took longer to gain traction in Latin America, the so-called “new normal” has accelerated its adoption. In fact, 56% of people in Latin America said they are more aware that cash carries more germs, while 84% believe that contactless payments are a more hygienic option.

“It is important to note that contactless and chip-based payment technologies, included in many debit and credit cards currently in circulation, are equivalent in terms of security and provide greater protection of users’ sensitive data compared to magnetic stripe payments,” said Carlos Mora, Acting Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce.

While it is uncertain when the pandemic will come to an end, consumer behavior is expected to remain the same afterward, and contactless payments will continue to be widely used. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that payment systems are constantly updated and operate with maximum efficiency in order to meet users’ needs.
